AstraZeneca Gains on Lung Cancer Trial Results

AstraZeneca shares rose after two Phase III lung cancer trials delivered positive results, although a separate late-stage trial setback limited gains.

Positive NSCLC Trial Results Support Shares

AstraZeneca stock rose 1.6% to trade at 11,650p after investors responded to new Phase III trial announcements in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The strongest result came from the SAFFRON study, which showed that a combination of Tagrisso and Orpathys, developed with partner HUTCHMED, produced statistically significant improvements in progression-free survival and overall survival compared with platinum-based doublet chemotherapy in patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC whose disease had progressed.

AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo also announced that Enhertu achieved its primary endpoint in the DESTINY-Lung04 Phase III trial, showing a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival as a first-line treatment for patients with HER2-mutant advanced NSCLC.

Volrustomig Trial Discontinued

The positive results were offset by AstraZeneca’s decision to discontinue the eVOLVE-Lung02 Phase III trial, which evaluated volrustomig combined with chemotherapy for patients with metastatic NSCLC with low PD-L1 expression.

An independent data monitoring committee determined that the treatment combination was unlikely to achieve its goals of improving progression-free survival or overall survival compared with the control arm.

AstraZeneca said the safety profile remained consistent with the individual medicines and that no new safety concerns were identified.

Pipeline Progress Faces Clinical Challenges

The eVOLVE-Lung02 setback adds to investor concerns following several unexpected trial failures this year, highlighting the risks involved in late-stage drug development.

Earlier setbacks included the failure of Wainua, developed with Ionis Pharmaceuticals, in the CARDIO-TTRansform Phase 3 study for a progressive and fatal heart condition. The trial failed to show an improvement over placebo in reducing cardiovascular deaths.

Investor Focus Remains on Oncology Growth

Despite the trial setback, the successful SAFFRON and DESTINY-Lung04 results reinforced confidence in AstraZeneca’s oncology pipeline and ability to deliver new treatments in high-priority cancer areas.

The company continues to balance pipeline progress with the uncertainty inherent in clinical development as it works toward its long-term growth objectives.
