Micron’s $50 Billion AI Memory Expansion

Micron Technology is investing $50 billion into two advanced semiconductor memory facilities in Idaho as demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) accelerates due to the growth of artificial intelligence. The expansion is expected to reshape Boise’s economy, create thousands of jobs and potentially generate significant employee wealth through stock ownership.

Micron is currently the only U.S.-based company producing HBM, a critical component used by AI processors from companies such as Nvidia and AMD. As AI systems require increasingly powerful computing infrastructure, demand for advanced memory continues to outpace available supply.

Micron Builds New AI Memory Capacity in Idaho

During Micron’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 earnings call, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra confirmed that the company’s new Boise facilities are progressing according to schedule. The ID1 facility is expected to produce its first wafers in mid-2027, while the ID2 facility is projected to begin production in late 2028.

The two semiconductor fabs represent one of Micron’s largest investments in U.S. manufacturing capacity. The company plans to add approximately 3,500 direct jobs at the Boise sites, expanding from its current workforce of around 7,000 employees in the region.

Micron has also acknowledged the broader staffing challenge involved in the expansion, noting that future operations could require a workforce of up to 17,000 jobs. The project is supported by up to $6.2 billion in CHIPS Act funding, alongside Micron’s planned $100 billion semiconductor campus in Clay, New York.

AI Demand Drives Semiconductor Investment

Micron’s expansion is tied closely to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure. High-bandwidth memory is essential for AI accelerators because it allows processors to access large amounts of data quickly during complex workloads.

The company expects significant capital spending as it builds new capacity. Fiscal 2026 capital expenditures are projected at approximately $27 billion, including around $10 billion in the fourth quarter alone.

However, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted several challenges affecting semiconductor expansion, including long construction timelines, shortages of workers with specialized trade skills, regulatory requirements and the need for additional energy infrastructure.

Micron Stock Creates New Wealth in Idaho

Micron shares have experienced significant gains, increasing more than 200% year to date and rising substantially over the previous year. The stock performance has created major wealth effects among employees and local investors who hold company shares.

Boise wealth manager JT Belnap described the experience of one client who gained approximately $1 million in stock value over eight trading days due largely to holdings in Micron.

However, the rapid increase in the company’s valuation has also created uncertainty among investors. Large gains have raised questions about how long the momentum can continue and whether current AI-driven demand will translate into sustained long-term growth.

Housing and Infrastructure Pressures Grow

Micron’s expansion is also affecting Idaho’s housing market and local infrastructure. The company’s investment is increasing demand for housing, skilled labor and public resources as more workers move into the region.

Mortgage broker Gerald Robinson noted that homes selling above their asking prices increased by 4.5% compared with the previous year, exceeding national averages.

The pressure comes as Idaho’s population has already grown significantly, with the state recording a 10.4% increase between 2020 and 2025, the fastest population growth rate in the United States. Expanding roads, utilities and workforce capacity will remain key challenges as Micron continues its semiconductor expansion.
