Elon Musk’s SpaceX is expanding its presence in the southern United States with plans to build a $100 billion launch facility in Louisiana, marking another major investment in the company’s long-term space ambitions.
The Louisiana Economic Development office announced that SpaceX will establish its Starbase facility in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, at a former Exxon property. The site is expected to support thousands of launches each year and become a major hub for the company’s future operations.
New Starbase Facility Will Support Starship Program
Once completed, Starbase Louisiana will serve as a primary launch facility for Starship, SpaceX’s next-generation rocket currently under development. The vehicle is the largest rocket ever built and is designed to be fully reusable.
The success of Starship is central to Musk’s broader goals, including expanding SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network, launching orbital data centers, and eventually supporting human missions to Mars. These ambitions also underpin the company’s valuation, which approaches $2 trillion.
SpaceX said the search for a location with suitable launch infrastructure and fuel access took approximately seven years. In a video released by the company, Musk said the Louisiana spaceport could bring around 10,000 jobs to the state.
According to a Louisiana fact sheet, SpaceX is expected to create approximately 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, along with an estimated 8,100 indirect jobs.
SpaceX Commits to Coastal Restoration Efforts
As part of the project, SpaceX said it will work with Louisiana officials on a coastal restoration initiative designed to restore marshland and strengthen storm protection around the facility’s wetlands.
The expansion follows legislative changes in Louisiana aimed at attracting aerospace investment. In May, Republican Governor Jeff Landry signed laws that provided financial incentives for aerospace manufacturers, exempted certain aerospace projects from public review requirements, and increased penalties for unauthorized entry into spaceports.
Previous Environmental Challenges in Texas
SpaceX’s first Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, faced criticism from local communities, lawsuits, and regulatory penalties related to environmental concerns.
During Starship’s first test flight in Texas in April 2023, the rocket’s energy damaged the concrete launchpad, causing debris to spread into nearby areas important for endangered species. A fire also affected several acres of Boca Chica State Park land.
In 2024, SpaceX was found by a Texas agency to have violated the Clean Water Act after repeatedly releasing pollutants into or near waterways connected to its Texas launch operations.
Musk Expands Space and Technology Operations Across the South
The Louisiana project continues Musk’s broader shift toward expanding operations outside California, with SpaceX increasing its presence across states including Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and now Louisiana.
Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, SpaceXAI, has developed Colossus data centers and a power facility in the Greater Memphis area. Tesla, another company led by Musk, previously moved its headquarters from California to Austin, Texas, where it operates a major vehicle manufacturing facility and tests autonomous services, including Robotaxi and Cybercab vehicles.
Tesla and SpaceX are also partnering with Intel on plans for a large AI chip manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas, further expanding Musk’s technology footprint in the region.
