PS5 sales slow as Sony shifts focus toward digital gaming

Sony’s PlayStation business is entering a period of uncertainty as the company faces slowing PS5 sales, rising console prices and questions about its long-term strategy for gaming hardware.

While Microsoft’s Xbox division continues to navigate its own challenges, Sony is also facing pressure as fewer consumers purchase PlayStation consoles. The company’s immediate goal is to ensure enough PS5 availability ahead of the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Sony’s strategy moving forward appears to center on affordability, even as the company prepares for a future where digital games and new hardware platforms play a larger role.

Sony acknowledges concerns over physical game sales

Sony recently addressed criticism surrounding its reported plan to eliminate physical PlayStation game sales by 2028, marking the first time the company has publicly discussed the controversy.

Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said the company is moving cautiously on reducing physical game availability and acknowledged that players have expressed strong opinions about the transition.

“We understand those emotions,” Tao said, adding that Sony wants to continue exploring how it can engage players within a future digital gaming ecosystem.

PS5 shipments decline despite strong digital sales

Sony’s latest financial results show that digital gaming continues to dominate its business. The company reported that 82% of game sales during the quarter came from digital purchases, including downloadable titles, microtransactions and digital-only releases.

However, hardware sales remain a concern. Sony shipped 1.6 million PS5 consoles during the quarter, a significant decline compared with the same period a year earlier.

The slowdown comes despite the PS5 being well into its lifecycle, as many consumers appear hesitant to purchase a console that now costs significantly more than when it launched.

Higher PlayStation prices create consumer pressure

Following recent price increases, the standard PlayStation 5 model with a disc drive now costs around $650, while the PlayStation 5 Pro has reached a price point of approximately $900.

The PS5 Pro originally launched at $700, making the latest pricing environment a challenge for consumers already facing higher costs across entertainment products.

Sony believes its comparison with high-end gaming PCs remains favourable, arguing that PlayStation hardware continues to offer a more affordable gaming experience.

GTA VI launch could become a major test

Sony is relying heavily on future game releases, particularly Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history.

The company is preparing console inventory ahead of the game’s expected release and stands to benefit from increased digital purchases through the PlayStation Store, where Sony earns a larger share of revenue.

However, PlayStation’s gaming and network segment revenue remained relatively flat compared with the previous year, highlighting the challenges facing the division.

Next-generation PlayStation development adds pressure

Sony has also acknowledged that development costs related to its next-generation platform, widely expected to be the PlayStation 6, are affecting overall revenue.

Although Sony has not revealed detailed plans for its next console, reports suggest the company may explore both traditional hardware and handheld gaming options.

Future consoles may face additional challenges as memory and component costs remain elevated, potentially making next-generation hardware more expensive.

The future of PlayStation ownership remains uncertain

Sony’s shift toward digital gaming raises broader questions about the future of console ownership. As physical media declines and hardware prices increase, players may begin to see new approaches such as subscription models, leasing options or expanded cloud gaming services.

For now, Sony believes PlayStation can compete through affordability compared with premium gaming PCs. However, convincing consumers to invest in future consoles may become increasingly difficult if current PS5 pricing continues to limit demand.
