Leading artificial intelligence companies are warning that advances in AI technology could soon enable more sophisticated cyberattacks targeting organizations such as hospitals, technology companies, and critical infrastructure providers.
In an open letter published Thursday, executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and dozens of other organizations said there is a limited opportunity to strengthen cybersecurity defenses before AI-powered attacks become significantly more dangerous.
AI Could Transform Cybersecurity Threats
The letter warned that the same AI capabilities driving innovation could also be used by attackers to identify vulnerabilities, automate cyber operations, and target digital systems at greater scale.
Signatories included major technology companies, cybersecurity firms such as CrowdStrike, and financial institutions including Citi and Capital One.
The organizations said AI can also help defenders by allowing companies to detect weaknesses, improve security processes, and respond more quickly to emerging threats.
According to a recent CrowdStrike cybersecurity report, AI-enabled attacks increased by 89% in 2025 compared with the previous year.
Current Cybersecurity Measures Are Not Enough
The companies said traditional cybersecurity approaches will not be sufficient to address future AI-driven threats.
The letter highlighted several existing weaknesses that leave organizations vulnerable, including outdated software, excessive system permissions, poor configurations, weak authentication systems, unpatched vulnerabilities, and technical debt from older infrastructure.
The group called for increased investment in cybersecurity teams and wider adoption of advanced AI-powered security tools to help defend against emerging threats.
Companies Urged to Share Security Intelligence
The letter also encouraged organizations, researchers, and cybersecurity experts to share information about threats and effective defense strategies.
The companies recommended developing shared threat intelligence, tested response plans, and measurable security goals focused on how quickly attacks are contained and how effectively vulnerabilities are resolved.
Call for Industry and Government Action
The organizations urged all companies to prioritize cybersecurity, including upgrading older technology systems that may be vulnerable to attacks.
Cybersecurity firms were encouraged to continuously test defenses against evolving AI capabilities, while governments were called on to support coordinated cybersecurity efforts and invest in defense strategies at local, national, and international levels.
AI Companies Face Responsibility for Security
The letter emphasized that leading AI companies have a responsibility to ensure their own systems are secure and that their models are accessed and used responsibly.
The signatories said AI developers should fund cybersecurity training, provide responsible access to AI systems, and implement stronger protections as artificial intelligence capabilities continue to advance.
